Plain-language definitions of the terms used across EnergyAtlasUSA.

Retail electricity price
The average price per kilowatt-hour paid by customers in a sector (residential, commercial, industrial), across every utility in the state. It's a state average, not a specific utility's rate.
kWh (kilowatt-hour)
The standard unit electricity is billed in — the energy used by a 1,000-watt appliance running for one hour. Prices here are in cents per kWh.
Generation mix
The breakdown of a state's electricity output by fuel source — coal, natural gas, nuclear, wind, solar, hydro, and everything else grouped as "Other". Reported annually, in thousand megawatt-hours.
MWh (megawatt-hour)
1,000 kilowatt-hours. Generation figures are shown in thousand MWh — the scale utilities and grid operators actually use.
Renewable share
Our own calculation: wind + solar + hydro generation divided by total generation, as a percentage. Nuclear and biomass are not counted as renewable in this figure.
MCF (thousand cubic feet)
The standard unit natural gas is priced in for residential, commercial and industrial delivery. Natural gas prices here are in dollars per MCF.
Sector (residential / commercial / industrial)
The EIA reports electricity and natural gas prices separately for homes (residential), businesses (commercial) and factories/large users (industrial) — industrial rates are usually the lowest of the three.
EIA (U.S. Energy Information Administration)
The statistics arm of the U.S. Department of Energy. It collects and publishes electricity, natural gas and petroleum data from utilities and producers nationwide — the source for every figure on this site.
State average
Every price on this site is averaged across a whole state's reporting utilities. It will not match any one household's bill, which depends on the specific utility, plan and usage.
